Christmas With the Mountain Gorillas in Africa

discovery channel animals, Sitting with a group of Mountain Gorillas in the rainforest of Central Africa is a stunning feeling. There are just 700 of these tender glorious monsters left in the World and just a chosen few have the chance to trek them. We began at 6am, just before sunrise, boarding our solid 4x4 vehicles. The sun was simply beginning to top once again the mountain ranges; I gazed upward and saw the Virungas before us. That is it, I thought, that is the place the Mountain Gorillas live.

discovery channel animals, We drove for 60 minutes to base camp, as we landed you could feel the fervor ascending amongst the gathering. There was 8 of us going to start an once in an existence time enterprise. We met our aide, Paul - not an extremely African name I thought! He let us know he was a previous poacher turned aide, his voice crackled as he clarified about his previous life before choosing to alter his way of living. He took us through the customs for the day, the rules and regulations when with the Gorilla family lastly we were off through the thick rainforest.

discovery channel animals, The sun was sparkling and we could feel the tender breeze gently brushing our appearances, as we ventured further into the timberland it got to be darker and somewhat creepy. Paul had specified that the trek could keep going for up to 2-3 hours at first this didn't appear to be too awful yet following 30 minutes the territory changed and now we were scrambling here and there elusive sloppy tracks.

2 hours into the trek, Paul halted and let us know the Gorillas were extremely close. Thank heavens I thought.

I turned upward into an adjacent tree and shockingly a little infant gorilla standing insecurely on a tree limb started beating his mid-section. He was under 2 meters from me. I could feel a grin planting itself all over ... I couldn't trust it. I was up close and personal with Mountain Gorillas. Paul and his off-siders let us know all to be calm. The Gorillas are here. We strolled a couple meters on into a characteristic clearing and there they were ........ 16 Mountain Gorillas of all shapes and sizes. We were totally encompassed by these tender goliaths - so a large portion of them we didn't know were to look.
